Archives and Post Grids
Promptless CPT Pages does not draw list pages itself. Records are listed by the theme’s archive page for the type, or by a Promptless WP Posts Grid section on any page. In both, each record appears as a card, and this plugin adds the post fields you placed on cards.
When to use which
Section titled “When to use which”- The theme archive (
/{type-address}/) exists as soon as Has archive page is on. It needs no setup and suits a plain list. - A Promptless WP post grid lets you design the page around the list — heading, intro, layout — and adds visitor filters and sorting. Use it for directories, event calendars and anything visitors search through. See Post Grid Sections.
What each card shows
Section titled “What each card shows”Each post field appears on cards at its Card position (see Post fields); a field whose card position is Hidden in this context, or that is hidden on that record, is left off. A location field shows its address as text.
Post fields on cards need either a Promptless WP post grid or the Promptless theme’s archive. On other themes the archive still lists the records, but without post fields.
On the Promptless theme’s archive, three settings on the record type change the cards: Post date, Post author and Card image aspect ratio. See Creating record types.
How to add filters and sorting
Section titled “How to add filters and sorting”- On the record type’s Post Fields screen, edit each field visitors should filter by and tick Let visitors filter the archive by this field under Filterable. For fields to sort by, tick Offer this field as a sort option (e.g. price: low to high) under Sortable. Select Update field.
- Attach any taxonomy you want as a filter to the record type, and assign terms to records.
- In Promptless WP, add a Posts Grid section, set Post Type to your record type, and tick Visitor Filters.
- Optionally set Default Sort (optional) on the section to a sortable
field key plus
_ascor_desc, such asprice_asc. Until a visitor picks a sort, the grid uses it.
The filter bar then builds itself. There is nothing else to configure.
Which control each field gets
Section titled “Which control each field gets”| Display type | Filter control |
|---|---|
| Currency, Progress bar | A minimum–maximum range |
| Number with label | A range, or a stepper (“1+, 2+, 3+”) |
| Rating | A stepper, or a range |
| Badge | A dropdown of one choice, or checkboxes |
| Multi-badge | Checkboxes |
| Date with an event start or end role | Upcoming, Happening now or Past |
| Other dates | A from–to date range |
| Text | A search box |
| Meta pair, Location | Cannot be filtered or sorted |
The first control listed is the default. On the field’s edit screen,
Widget style switches a number or rating between Range slider and
Stepper (1+, 2+, 3+ buttons). Through the connector, filter_widget
also switches a badge to checkboxes or an event date to a date range.
Each public taxonomy on the type becomes a group of checkboxes. It lists only terms that published records of this type carry, plus their parent terms, up to 100 — so a shared taxonomy such as Categories does not offer your blog’s categories on a meetings grid.
Limits and common problems
Section titled “Limits and common problems”- A filterable field key cannot end in
_min,_max,_when,_after,_beforeor_q, or besortorpaged. Those names are used in the filter’s web addresses. - Filter addresses may start with
f_. When a field or taxonomy name would clash with a WordPress address word — a post type slug, a taxonomy, or words likenameorauthor— its filter usesf_in front, such as?f_neighborhood=downtown. Copy filter links from the page rather than typing them. - The filter bar shows nothing. No field is marked filterable and the type has no public taxonomy with terms in use, or Visitor Filters is off on the section.
- A taxonomy is missing from the filters. It is not public or has no admin screen, or no published record of this type has one of its terms.
- Cards show no fields on my theme. See “What each card shows” above.
