Post Grid Sections

A Post Grid section lists published content from your site: blog posts, pages, or records of any other post type, including the record types you create with Promptless CPT Pages. Each post appears as a card with its featured image, title, excerpt and a link. The list is read live when the page loads, so new posts appear without editing the page. In the editor’s section list it is called Posts Grid.

  • A “latest news” or “from the blog” block on the home page.
  • An archive page for a record type, such as events, properties or staff, with a filter bar visitors can use.
  • A strip of related posts at the end of a page (Carousel).

To sell WooCommerce products, use Product Grid Sections. For hand-written cards that do not come from posts, use Features Sections.

The Content tab holds the standard section fields: Eyebrow Heading, Heading, Body Content, buttons, and Outro Content (shown after the posts). The posts themselves come from the Query tab.

All of these are in the Query tab.

Event Date SortAppears with an event filter. Auto lists upcoming events soonest first and past events latest first. It overrides Order By.Auto

Only published posts are listed. The editor canvas shows the same posts, in the same order, as the live page.

Also in the Query tab, under Content Display: Post Date, Post Author, Categories and Excerpt can each be shown or hidden. With the excerpt shown, you can set Excerpt Length (words) (10–100, default 20) and the link text in Read More Text (default “Read More”). Categories shows WordPress post categories only. Records from Promptless CPT Pages also show the post fields their record type puts on cards.

Whether the read-more link is a text link or a small button follows Card CTA Style in Global Settings.

With Visitor Filters ticked (Let visitors filter & sort this grid), the section shows a filter bar that visitors use to narrow the results. You do not build the bar. It is generated from the post type:

  • Taxonomies. Each public taxonomy of the post type becomes a group of checkboxes, such as Categories and Tags for blog posts. Terms with no published posts are left out.
  • Post fields. On a Promptless CPT Pages record type, each field marked filterable in that plugin adds a control that suits the field: a min–max range for prices and numbers, a “3+“-style minimum for ratings, a dropdown for a single choice, checkboxes for multiple choices, a search box for text, from–to dates for a date, and Upcoming, Happening now or Past for an event date.
  • Sort by. Each field marked sortable adds “low to high” and “high to low” options.

The filter bar needs the Promptless CPT Pages plugin, which supplies these controls. Without it, or when the post type has nothing to filter, the section shows no filter bar.

How it behaves for visitors:

  • Results update in place. Choosing a checkbox or dropdown updates the posts straight away; typing in a search, number or date box updates them after a short pause. Apply filters does the same. The page does not reload.
  • The address keeps the filters. A filtered view can be bookmarked or shared, and the browser’s Back button steps back through filter changes. Changing a filter returns to page 1.
  • Active filters appear as chips above the results, each with a × to remove it, and a Clear all link once two or more are active. A result count (“12 results”) is announced to screen readers when it changes. Reset all in the bar clears everything.
  • No matches shows “No results match your filters.” with a Reset all filters link.
  • On screens 782 pixels wide or narrower, the bar folds away behind a Filters button, which shows the number of active filters, for example “Filters (2)”. Tapping it opens the controls as a panel above the results.
  • Without JavaScript, the bar still works as a normal form that reloads the page.
  • Search engines. Filtered addresses are marked noindex and point their canonical address at the unfiltered page, so filter combinations do not become duplicate pages. If an SEO plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math is active, Promptless WP leaves this to that plugin.
Filter settingWhat it doesDefault
Filter LayoutTop bar (above grid) or Sidebar (beside grid).Top bar
Default Sort (optional)The sort used until a visitor picks one, written as a sortable field key plus _asc or _desc, for example price_asc. Blank uses Order By.Blank

The filter bar is drawn on the live page and in Preview, not in the editor canvas.

In the Layout tab, Display Style arranges the same cards four ways:

StyleWhat it looks like
GridCards in rows. Set Cards Per Row to 2, 3 or 4. The default.
ListOne post per row, image on the left and text on the right. Suits news and events.
FeaturedThe first post as a large card, the rest as compact rows beside it. The rows leave out the excerpt and link. Side List Images shows or hides their thumbnails. With events sorted soonest first, the next event becomes the large card. No pagination.
CarouselThe cards on a horizontal rail. Set Slides Per View (Auto (size-driven), 2, 3 or 4), Peek Next Card, Arrows, Dots, Loop, and Autoplay with an Autoplay Interval of 3–8 seconds. Autoplay adds a pause button and never runs for visitors who ask for reduced motion. No pagination.

Controls that do not apply to the chosen style are hidden, and their values are kept for when you switch back.

OptionWhat it doesDefault

Card Image Aspect RatioWide (16:9), Standard (4:3) or Square (1:1).Wide

Layout VariantLeft, Center or Right: where the heading content sits relative to any section media.Center

The section also has the shared controls: Theme Variant, colour palette, Scroll Animation, background, section media, Image Styling, heading size and the Advanced tab. See Working with Sections.

  • “No posts found matching your query criteria.” No published post matches. Check the post type, the ticked terms, All (AND) matching, and the event filter.
  • A card has no image. The post has no featured image. Set one on the post.
  • The filter bar does not appear. Visitor Filters is off, Promptless CPT Pages is not active, or the post type has no public taxonomy and no filterable field.
  • Pagination links are missing. Featured and Carousel never paginate.
  • One section, one post type. To mix post types, use two sections.
