Footer Layout and Content

The footer has a main area with up to five columns and a bottom bar. The main area always has a brand column; the other columns appear only when you give them something to show, and the layout adjusts to how many there are.

PartWhat fills it
Brand columnThe footer logo, then the Footer Brand Description, or the site’s Tagline when the description is empty.
Menu columns 1 to 3The menus assigned to Footer Column 1, Footer Column 2 and Footer Column 3, each with an optional heading.
Social columnWidgets placed in the Footer Social Links widget area.
Bottom bar, left”© year Site Title. All rights reserved.”
Bottom bar, rightThe menu assigned to Footer Menu, typically privacy and terms links.

All footer menus show one level; sub-items are not shown.

  1. In Appearance → Menus, assign menus to the footer locations you want. See Menus.
  2. For social links, go to Appearance → Widgets and add widgets, such as a Social Icons block, to Footer Social Links.
  3. Go to Appearance → Customize → Footer → Footer Appearance and set the options below.
  4. In Footer → Footer Columns, type a heading for each menu column you use.
  5. Select Publish.

Without any logo, the brand column shows the site title. For how the header and footer choose between logo versions, see Header.

The footer’s muted text (copyright, tagline, brand text and bottom links) uses Promptless WP’s contrast-checked muted colour for the footer background, so it stays readable on a tinted footer.

An AI assistant connected through Promptless WP’s connector can set Footer Theme, Footer Brand Description and the three column headings with wordpress_footer_set, and build and assign the footer menus with wordpress_menu. The footer logos and widgets are set only in WordPress admin. See Connector Tools.

  • The copyright line cannot be edited. It is written by the theme from the current year and the Site Title in Settings → General.
  • A column is missing. Its location has no menu assigned. A heading alone does not show a column.
  • Widgets in “Footer Widgets” do not appear. Appearance → Widgets lists a Footer Widgets area, but the theme does not display it. Use Footer Social Links.
  • Part of the brand description disappeared on save. Scripts and any other HTML that WordPress does not allow in post content are removed.
