Archives
The blog page, category, tag, author, date and custom post type archives all show their posts as a grid of cards. The cards use the same markup as Promptless WP’s Post Grid section, so an archive looks like a post grid on a Promptless page and follows the same Global Settings.
What an archive shows
Section titled “What an archive shows”- A title. The category, tag, author or post type name, without a prefix such as “Category:”. The blog page uses the title of the page set as the Posts page in Settings → Reading, or “Latest Posts”.
- A description, when the category, tag or term has one.
- A card for each post: the featured image, a line with the date, author and first category, the title, a 20-word excerpt and a Read more link.
- Page numbers when there are more posts than fit on one page. How many posts a page holds is set in Settings → Reading.
- A Nothing Found message when the archive is empty.
The Read more link follows Card CTA Style, the cards follow Cards and Card Image Style, all in Promptless WP’s Global Settings → Borders. See Global Settings.
How to hide the date or author
Section titled “How to hide the date or author”- Go to Appearance → Customize → Content.
- Untick Show Date on Post Cards or Show Author on Post Cards.
- Select Publish.
| Option | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Show Date on Post Cards | The publish date on cards in archives and search results. | On |
| Show Author on Post Cards | The author’s name on the same cards. | On |
Pages never show a date or author on a card, whatever these settings say.
Promptless CPT Pages record types
Section titled “Promptless CPT Pages record types”For each record type made with Promptless CPT Pages, the plugin sets the archive cards itself. Go to Post Runtime → Post Types, edit the type, and use the Archive card meta settings:
| Setting | What it does | Default for a new type |
|---|---|---|
| Post date | Shows the post’s creation date on this type’s cards. | Off |
| Post author | Shows the author on this type’s cards. | Off |
| Card image aspect ratio | 16:9 — Wide (default), 4:3 — Standard, 1:1 — Square or 4:5 — Portrait. | 16:9 |
For these types, the plugin’s Post date and Post author settings decide, not the Customizer. Square or Portrait suits people such as staff or agents; Standard suits property and product photos.
All other archives use 16:9 images.
For developers
Section titled “For developers”| Hook | Type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
promptless_archive_card_show_date | Filter | Return false to hide the date on a card. Receives $show and $post_id. |
promptless_archive_card_show_author | Filter | The same for the author. |
promptless_archive_image_aspect | Filter | Return 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 or 4:5. Receives the aspect and the archive’s post type (empty on search results). |
promptless_archive_card_section | Action | Fires inside each card at image_overlay, headline, subtitle, meta_strip and footer_meta, with the position and post ID. Echo your output. |
The Customizer’s date and author settings are applied at priority 5, so a filter at the default priority has the last word.
Limits and common problems
Section titled “Limits and common problems”- The date still shows on a record type’s archive after unticking Show Date on Post Cards. The type is managed by Promptless CPT Pages; change its Post date setting instead.
- Images are cropped. Cards crop the featured image to the aspect ratio. Choose a ratio closer to your images, or crop the images before upload.
- A card has no image. The post has no featured image. The card is shown without one.
