What the Promptless Theme Is

The Promptless theme is a free, classic (not block-based) WordPress theme built to sit around pages made with Promptless WP. It draws the parts of the site a page builder does not: the header, menus, top bar, announcement bar, breadcrumbs, footer, blog posts, archives, search results and the 404 page. It has no sidebars; every template is one column.

How it takes its styling from Promptless WP

Promptless WP’s Global Settings produce the site’s colours, fonts, border radius, button styles and container width. The theme tells Promptless WP it is a native theme, so the plugin outputs those settings on every page, not only on pages with sections, and the theme’s header, footer, archives and shop pages read them. There is nothing to connect: change a colour in Global Settings and the header changes with the sections.

Each part of the theme has a Light or Dark setting of its own (the header, the stacked layout’s menu bar, the top bar, the announcement bar, the footer, breadcrumbs and page content). Light and Dark use your palette’s light and dark colours, the same pair a section’s theme variant uses. There is no visitor-facing dark mode switch; each part keeps the variant you choose.

Other things that follow Global Settings:

  • Header buttons, the announcement bar button, the 404 button and the mini-cart buttons use Promptless WP’s button styles.
  • Archive and search result cards use the same markup as the Post Grid section, so they follow the Cards, Card CTA Style and Card Image Style settings.
  • The header, footer and page content line up with sections, because the theme’s container follows the Width on the Layout tab.
  • The block editor shows your palette colours while you write a post.

The theme works without the plugin. It then uses its own fallback styling: an indigo accent colour, the system font, and a 1,280px container. Everything else keeps working, with two differences:

  • [re:KEY] reusable element shortcodes in the announcement bar show as typed.
  • Every screen in WordPress admin shows the warning “The Promptless WP plugin is not active. Sections will not render until you activate it.” It cannot be dismissed.

The theme expects Promptless WP 1.3.0 or newer. With an older version the same admin warning asks you to update.

TemplateUsed for
PageOrdinary WordPress pages: the title (not on the front page) and the featured image side by side, then the content.
Single postBlog posts and other single items without their own template: title, date, author, reading time, featured image, content, tags and links to the previous and next post.
Full Width (aisb-fullwidth.php)Promptless WP pages in Full Width display mode: the theme’s header and footer, with sections across the full window.
Canvas (aisb-canvas.php)Promptless WP pages in Canvas display mode: sections only, with no header, footer, top bar or announcement bar.

You do not choose Full Width or Canvas in WordPress’s Template menu. Promptless WP picks them from the page’s Display Mode, and uses the theme’s versions because the theme provides them. See Working with WordPress Themes.

Every theme setting is a WordPress theme setting (“theme mod”), edited in Appearance → Customize. Promptless WP’s connector writes the same settings, so an AI assistant can change the header, top bar, footer and announcement bar. The theme has no connector of its own. See Customizer settings for which settings the connector covers.
