AI Features Overview
Promptless WP has two AI features built into the editor. Generate with AI in the editor toolbar turns a Word document, a Markdown file or pasted text into page sections. Generate with AI beside an image field creates an image from a description and saves it to the Media Library. Both run on your own API keys: nothing is included with the plugin.
Built-in AI features and the connector
Section titled “Built-in AI features and the connector”These are separate things.
- Built-in AI features run inside the Promptless WP editor. You supply the content, the site calls OpenAI or Replicate with the site owner’s key, and you review the result before it goes on the page.
- The connector lets an external AI assistant, such as Claude, build and edit the site for you through conversation. It does not use the OpenAI key. See Connector Overview.
The one piece they share is the Replicate key: the connector’s image generation uses the same key as the editor’s image generator.
What each feature needs
Section titled “What each feature needs”| Feature | Provider | Key entered in | Required for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generate sections from content | OpenAI, model GPT-4.1 | OpenAI API Key | Document Upload and How AI Generation Works |
| Generate images | Replicate, FLUX models | Replicate API Key | AI Image Generation |
Each key belongs to the site owner’s own account with that provider, and that account is billed for every request. OpenAI requires a payment method and credits on the account before its API works. Replicate charges per image.
Keys are entered on Promptless WP → AI Settings in wp-admin. See Plugin Settings. The same page has keys for Pexels and Pixabay stock photos, which the connector uses; they are not needed for the features on this page.
Who can use them
Section titled “Who can use them”Only users with the Developer (Full Access) Promptless WP access level can use the AI features. Administrators have it by default. Other editors default to Client (Content Editing Only), which hides the toolbar’s Generate with AI button and refuses image generation. An administrator can change a user’s level on their WordPress profile, under Promptless WP Access Level.
How to set up the AI features
Section titled “How to set up the AI features”- Create an API key in your OpenAI account, and add credits.
- In wp-admin, open Promptless WP → AI Settings.
- Paste the key into OpenAI API Key, select Test Connection, then Save Changes.
- For images, paste a Replicate key into Replicate API Key and select Save API Key.
Keys are stored encrypted with your site’s WordPress security keys. If those keys change, for example after moving the site to a new server, WordPress shows API Key Recovery Required and you need to enter the key again.
What happens to your content
Section titled “What happens to your content”Content you generate from is sent from your site to OpenAI’s API, and image descriptions are sent to Replicate. Their own terms and data policies apply. Remove anything confidential before you upload or paste it.
Promptless WP keeps the sections generated from a given piece of content for 24 hours, so generating from the same content again returns the same result without a second charge. To force a new result, clear the cache on Promptless WP → Cache Management with Clear AI Cache.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- Section generation only produces nine section types: Hero, Features, Stats, FAQ, Testimonials, Checklist, Steps, Team and Pricing. The other section types (Post Grid, Product Grid, Gallery and Map) are added by hand.
- Generation reads about the first 10,000 characters of your content. Split longer documents and generate each part separately.
- The AI is instructed to keep your wording exactly as written. It organises content; it does not write new copy, and it does not add buttons or links that are not in the source.
- Generated sections are a draft. Check every one in the editor before you save.
