Troubleshooting
Each heading below is a symptom, followed by its usual cause and the fix. For AI generation problems, see AI Troubleshooting. For the connector, see Setting Up the Promptless Connector.
The page shows the theme’s normal content instead of the sections
Section titled “The page shows the theme’s normal content instead of the sections”Cause: Promptless WP is not active for the page, the page has no saved sections, or the page’s Display Mode is Shortcode without the shortcode in the content.
Fix: Edit the page in WordPress and look at the Promptless WP box. If it says Promptless WP is not active for this page, select Activate Promptless WP. If the display mode is Shortcode - Use [promptless_wp] in your page, add [promptless_wp] to the page content, or switch to Full Width - With theme header/footer. See Working with WordPress Themes.
Saved changes do not appear on the live page
Section titled “Saved changes do not appear on the live page”Cause: A page cache, host cache or CDN is serving a stored copy of the page.
Fix: Clear the page cache in your caching plugin or hosting panel, then reload. Promptless WP’s Cache Management screen does not clear page caches; it only holds AI responses. If a logged-in view shows the change and a private browser window does not, it is a cache.
The theme’s page title appears above the sections, or the sections sit in a narrow column
Section titled “The theme’s page title appears above the sections, or the sections sit in a narrow column”Cause: Your theme adds its own title or content container to Full Width pages in a way Promptless WP does not adjust for.
Fix: Choose the theme’s full-width or no-sidebar layout for the page, or switch the page to Canvas - Blank page (no header/footer). See Adjustments for other themes.
“Free plan is limited to 2 pages”
Section titled ““Free plan is limited to 2 pages””Cause: The free plan allows the builder on two pages. This message appears when you try to activate it on a third.
Fix: Deactivate the builder on a page you no longer need (Deactivate Builder in its Promptless WP box), or upgrade. Pages that are already published keep working whatever the licence. See Licensing & Plans.
“Page Currently Being Edited” or “Page Locked”
Section titled ““Page Currently Being Edited” or “Page Locked””Cause: Someone else has the page open in the Promptless WP editor. A lock stops two people overwriting each other’s work. It clears about two and a half minutes after they close the editor.
Fix: Wait, or ask them to close the page. From the page’s Promptless WP box you can choose to take over editing; the other person loses any unsaved changes.
You cannot open a page in the Promptless WP editor
Section titled “You cannot open a page in the Promptless WP editor”Cause: Your WordPress role cannot edit that page, the page belongs to a department you are not in, or your Promptless WP access level is No Access. The first two show “You do not have permission to edit this post”.
Fix: Ask an administrator to check your role, your departments and your Promptless WP Access Level. See Departments and Editor Access.
Global Settings or the AI buttons are missing from the editor
Section titled “Global Settings or the AI buttons are missing from the editor”Cause: Your access level is Client (Content Editing Only), which edits sections but not site-wide design or AI.
Fix: An administrator can change your access level on your user profile, under Promptless WP Settings.
A section looks unstyled, or old styling returns after an update
Section titled “A section looks unstyled, or old styling returns after an update”Cause: The browser, a CDN or an optimisation plugin that combines stylesheets is serving an old copy of a Promptless stylesheet.
Fix: Clear the optimisation plugin’s cache and any CDN cache, then hard-reload the page. If it persists only with a CSS-combining or minifying option turned on, exclude files under ai-section-builder-modern/build/ from that option.
AI features stopped working after moving the site
Section titled “AI features stopped working after moving the site”Cause: The OpenAI key is encrypted with the site’s security keys, which changed in the move. AI Settings shows API Key Recovery Required.
Fix: Enter the OpenAI key again on Promptless WP → AI Settings. See Plugin Settings.
Links and images still point at the old domain after a move
Section titled “Links and images still point at the old domain after a move”Cause: Sections store image addresses, and links typed in full, with the domain they were entered on. Moving the site does not always rewrite them.
Fix: Run Promptless WP → Domain Migration. See Domain Migration.
An old page address shows “page not found”
Section titled “An old page address shows “page not found””Cause: The page was renamed or moved while not published, or it is now a draft, private or in the trash.
Fix: Publish the page, or point the old address at the page that replaced it. See Redirects.
A new translation of a page is empty
Section titled “A new translation of a page is empty”Cause: The translation plugin did not copy the page’s sections.
Fix: See Multilingual Sites.
Something else
Section titled “Something else”Switch temporarily to a default WordPress theme and deactivate other plugins one at a time on a staging copy of the site. If the problem goes away, the last theme or plugin you changed is involved. When you contact support, include your WordPress, PHP and Promptless WP versions, your theme, and any error shown in the browser console (F12).
