Working with Sections
A Promptless WP page is a list of sections, one after another. Each section has a type, such as Hero, Features or FAQ, and its own content and layout settings. This page covers managing sections in the editor. What each type offers is in Section Types.
When to use it
Section titled “When to use it”- Building or changing a page in the Promptless WP editor.
- Reusing a section from one page on another.
- Trying a different layout or section type without rebuilding the content.
To create a whole page’s sections from a document, see Document Upload.
How to add a section
Section titled “How to add a section”- Select Add new section (the plus icon) in the toolbar. The left panel shows Add Section.
- Select a section type. The available types are Hero, Features, Stats, Testimonials, Checklist, FAQ, Team, Pricing, Steps, Gallery, Posts Grid, Map, and WooCommerce when WooCommerce is active.
- The section is added at the end of the page with starter content and opens for editing.
To place it elsewhere, move it in the Structure panel (see below).
How to edit a section
Section titled “How to edit a section”- Select the section in the canvas, or its row in the Structure panel (open it with Toggle Right Sidebar in the toolbar).
- Its settings open in the left panel, usually on three tabs:
- Content: eyebrow heading, heading, body text, the section’s items (cards, questions, plans and so on), outro text and buttons.
- Layout: Theme Variant, Section Palette, background, and the section’s display options.
- Advanced: Custom ID, Custom Classes and Custom CSS.
- Changes show in the canvas as you make them. They are saved to the page when you select Publish or Update.
The first section’s heading is the page’s main (H1) heading; every later section’s heading is an H2.
Items within a section
Section titled “Items within a section”Items such as feature cards or FAQ questions have Move Up, Move Down and Remove buttons, and an Add button below the list. In Features, Checklist, Steps, FAQ and Stats, Bulk add from list… lets you paste many items at once: one item per line, with :: separating the first field from the second.
Fast delivery :: Orders arrive within two daysFree returns :: Send anything back within 30 daysFor FAQ the two parts are the question and the answer; for Stats, the value and the label.
Linking to a section
Section titled “Linking to a section”Give the section a Custom ID on its Advanced tab, such as pricing. It must start with a letter or underscore and use only letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. Link to it with #pricing from a button on the same page, or with the page address followed by #pricing from anywhere else.
How to reorder sections
Section titled “How to reorder sections”In the Structure panel, use Move up and Move down on a section’s row, or drag the row to a new place.
How to duplicate, copy and paste
Section titled “How to duplicate, copy and paste”- Duplicate: select Duplicate section on the row. The copy appears directly below and opens for editing.
- Copy to another page: select Copy to clipboard on the row. Open the other page in the editor, then select Paste at the bottom of the Structure panel, which inserts it after the selected section (or at the end), or the Paste Section card at the top of Add Section, which adds it at the end.
The copied section is held in your browser, so paste in the same browser you copied from. It stays there until you copy another section.
A duplicate or pasted section keeps the original’s Custom ID. Change it if both are on the same page, because an ID must be unique.
How to convert a section to another type
Section titled “How to convert a section to another type”Converting builds a new section of another type from the selected one, keeping the content they have in common. The original stays in place.
- On the section’s row in the Structure panel, select Convert section type.
- Under Convert to:, choose a type, then select Create followed by the type name.
- The new section appears directly below the original and opens for editing. Delete the original when you are happy with the result.
| From | Can become |
|---|---|
| Features, Checklist, Steps, FAQ | Any other type in this group |
| Team | Testimonials |
| Testimonials | Team |
| Hero | Features, Checklist, Steps, FAQ, Stats or Testimonials |
| Features with no cards | Hero, as well as the group above |
The heading, body, outro, buttons, background, theme variant, section palette and Advanced settings carry across. Items are mapped to the new type’s items where it has a matching field; anything the new type has no place for, such as icons and links when converting to FAQ, is left out. A Hero that shows logos cannot be converted. Stats, Pricing, Gallery, Posts Grid, WooCommerce and Map sections cannot be converted; the panel says there are no compatible section types.
How to remix a section’s layout
Section titled “How to remix a section’s layout”Remix layout (the button in the left panel’s header) picks a new combination of layout options for the selected section, chosen to suit its content: for example a different display style, column count or card style. The content is unchanged. Select it again for another combination, or undo to go back.
Remix is available for Hero, Features, Stats, Testimonials, Team, FAQ, Steps and Checklist.
How to give a section its own colours
Section titled “How to give a section its own colours”On the section’s Layout tab, Section Palette applies a colour palette to that section only, instead of the global colours. Reset to global colors removes it. See Colors & Branding. To switch a section between light and dark, use Theme Variant; see Theme Variants.
How to delete sections
Section titled “How to delete sections”- One section: select Delete section on its row in the Structure panel and confirm.
- Every section: select Delete All at the bottom of the Structure panel and confirm.
Nothing is removed from the live page until you save, and you can undo a deletion.
Undo and redo
Section titled “Undo and redo”Undo reverses changes to sections: adding, deleting, moving, duplicating, converting, remixing, applying a palette and editing content. Typing is grouped, so one undo reverses a burst of typing rather than one letter. The editor keeps the last 50 steps.
Undo history starts empty each time you open the editor. For changes from an earlier session, use Revision History.
Keyboard shortcuts
Section titled “Keyboard shortcuts”These work when the cursor is not in a text field; inside one, undo and redo apply to your typing instead. On a Mac, use Cmd in place of Ctrl.
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Z | Undo |
| Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y | Redo |
| Ctrl+C | Copy the selected section |
| Ctrl+V | Paste the copied section after the selected one |
| Ctrl+D | Duplicate the selected section |
| Delete or Backspace | Delete the selected section, after confirming |
| Shift+S | Hide or show both side panels, the same as Hide Panels / Show Panels |
Limits and common problems
Section titled “Limits and common problems”- New sections always go to the end of the page. Move them afterwards in the Structure panel.
- Paste is missing. Nothing has been copied in this browser. Copy the section again from the page it is on.
- Undo does nothing. The cursor is in a text field, or you have undone everything since you opened the editor.
