Map Sections

A Map section shows a Google Map of one address, with a “Get directions” link below it. It needs no Google API key or account: you type an address, or leave it blank to use your business address. Like other sections it has a heading and body above the map and outro text and buttons below it.

  • A contact or “visit us” page.
  • A page for an event or a single location.

A Map section shows one pin. For several locations, use one map per location page, or list the addresses in another section with links to Google Maps.

The Content tab holds the standard fields: Eyebrow Heading, Heading, Body Content, buttons, and Outro Content. In the Split layout the body sits beside the map, which suits an address, opening hours or a form shortcode.

Type it in Address on the Map tab: a street address, a place or a business name, as you would search for it in Google Maps.

Leave Address blank to use the address saved under Promptless WP → Business Identity in wp-admin. The map reads that address each time the page is shown, so changing it there updates every map that uses it.

If there is no address in either place, the live page shows the section without a map, and the editor shows a reminder in the map’s place.

Loading: show immediately or click to load

Section titled “Loading: show immediately or click to load”

Map Loading decides when the Google Map is fetched. A Google Map is a large download and sets Google cookies.

ModeWhat visitors see
Show immediatelyThe map itself. The browser fetches it only as the visitor scrolls near it, and its space is reserved so nothing jumps when it arrives.
Click to loadA placeholder with a pin, the address and Load map. Nothing is fetched from Google, and no Google cookies are set, until the visitor selects it.

Choose Click to load when:

  • Keyboard accessibility matters. In Show immediately, the embedded map is a keyboard stop, but the page cannot draw a focus outline on it, because the map is a separate document from Google. Keyboard users cannot see when they are on it. The Load map placeholder is an ordinary button with a visible focus outline. See Accessibility.
  • Privacy rules require consent before contacting Google.
  • The map is near the top of the page, where fetching it would slow the first view.

In either mode, the map’s own script and styles load only on pages that have a Map section.

Layout on the Map tab:

The section also has the shared controls: Theme Variant, colour palette, Scroll Animation, background, heading size and the Advanced tab. See Working with Sections.

  • One pin, Google Maps only. No multiple markers, no other map providers and no custom map styling.
  • The map stays light in a dark section. Google’s embed cannot be restyled. The placeholder and directions link follow the dark theme.
  • The wrong place is pinned. Google is matching the address text. Make it more specific: add the city and postcode, or use the business name as it appears on Google Maps.
  • No map on the live page. Neither the section nor Business Identity has an address.
