Editor Overview
Promptless WP is switched on page by page. Once it is on, the page’s content comes from its sections, which you build in the Promptless WP editor, a full-screen editor separate from the WordPress block editor. This page covers getting a page into the editor. For a tour of the editor itself, see Understanding the Interface.
When to use it
Section titled “When to use it”- You are starting a new page or post that should be built from sections.
- You want to edit a page that already uses Promptless WP.
- You want to change how a Promptless page sits in your theme: with or without the header and footer.
Promptless WP works on pages and posts. It does not replace the block editor on pages where it is off.
How to turn Promptless WP on for a page
Section titled “How to turn Promptless WP on for a page”- Open the page or post in WordPress (Pages, then the page, or Add New Page).
- Find the Promptless WP box below the content area.
- Select Activate Promptless WP.
- If the page has no title yet, you are asked for one. If it already has content, you are warned that Promptless WP will manage the page’s layout; the existing content is kept.
- The editor opens. A brand-new page is saved as a draft first so it has somewhere to store sections.
Activation is refused when another page builder (Elementor, Divi, Beaver Builder or WPBakery) is already in use on that page. Turn that builder off for the page first.
How to open the editor on a page that uses it
Section titled “How to open the editor on a page that uses it”- From the page screen in wp-admin: in the Promptless WP box, select Edit with Promptless WP.
- From the live site: while logged in, view the page and select Edit with Promptless in the admin bar at the top. It only appears on pages and posts that use Promptless WP, and only for people who can edit them.
To leave the editor, select the back arrow at the far left of the toolbar (Back to Editor). It returns you to the WordPress page screen.
How to turn Promptless WP off for a page
Section titled “How to turn Promptless WP off for a page”In the Promptless WP box, select Deactivate Builder and confirm. The sections are kept, so turning it back on later brings them back. While it is off, the page shows its ordinary WordPress content.
Display modes
Section titled “Display modes”When Promptless WP is on, the Promptless WP box shows a Display Mode list. The choice is saved as soon as you change it.
| Mode | What visitors see | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Canvas - Blank page (no header/footer) | Only your sections. No theme header, footer or menus. Suits landing pages. | |
| Full Width - With theme header/footer | Your sections at full width between the theme’s header and footer. | Yes |
| Shortcode - Use [promptless_wp] in your page | The theme’s normal page layout. Sections appear wherever you place the [promptless_wp] shortcode in the page’s own content. A Copy button copies the shortcode. |
Canvas and Full Width use Promptless WP’s own page templates, so they work with any theme. A theme can supply its own version by including aisb-canvas.php or aisb-fullwidth.php; the Promptless theme is built to work with both.
When someone else has the page open
Section titled “When someone else has the page open”Only one person can edit a page’s sections at a time. Opening the editor puts a lock on the page, which lasts while the editor is open and is released when you leave it. A lock left behind by a closed browser expires after two and a half minutes.
- Opening a page someone else is editing: you are told who is editing it and asked whether to take over. Taking over opens the editor for you; the other person loses any changes they had not saved.
- Someone takes over from you: a message tells you who has taken over and that your changes may not have been saved. Select Go to Pages to leave.
- Opening the editor from a saved link while the page is locked: a Page Currently Being Edited screen names the person editing it. Wait for them, or use Edit with Promptless WP on the page screen to be offered the takeover.
The lock icon next to the page title in the toolbar shows the lock’s state. Hover over it for details: “Lock active - your changes are protected” is the normal state. If the editor cannot reach the site to confirm the lock, a Connection Issues banner appears with a Check Now button. If your WordPress login expires while you edit, a window asks you to log in again; your unsaved changes stay in the editor.
The free plan’s page limit
Section titled “The free plan’s page limit”On the free plan, Promptless WP can be on for two pages or posts at a time. Pages in the trash do not count. The Promptless WP box tells you how many you have left, and once both are used, Activate Promptless WP is disabled with a Manage License link. Turning Promptless WP off on a page frees its place.
The limit only affects turning Promptless WP on. Pages that already use it keep working and stay editable. See Licensing & Plans.
Limits and common problems
Section titled “Limits and common problems”- There is no Promptless WP box on the page screen. It may be hidden. In the block editor, turn it on under Preferences, Panels; in the classic editor, under Screen Options.
- Edit with Promptless is missing from the admin bar. Promptless WP is off for that page, or your account cannot edit it. It is not shown inside wp-admin.
- The editor shows No Post Selected. The editor always works on one page or post. Open it from that page’s screen instead.
