Colors & Branding

Promptless WP colours every section from one palette of 12 colours: a primary and a secondary brand colour, and five colours each for light and dark sections (background, surface, text, muted text and border). You set the palette in Global Settings, either by applying a preset or by choosing each colour, and you can give a single section a different palette.

  • Setting a new site’s brand colours, or rebranding an existing one.
  • Keeping two or three approved palettes to hand for the whole team.
  • Making one section stand out, such as a call to action, without changing the rest of the site.

For what each colour setting does and its default, see Global Settings. Whether a section uses the light or dark set is its Theme Variant; see Theme Variants.

  1. In the editor, open Global settings (the gear button) and stay on the Colors tab.
  2. Select Browse Color Presets. The Choose a Color Preset window opens.
  3. Pick a preset from the list. Your Custom Presets come first, then Built-in Presets (just over 100, grouped by colour family). Use Search presets… to filter by name, category or description.
  4. Check the preview on the right. It shows the preset on a light and a dark section.
  5. Select Apply Preset. The panel and the open page take the new colours.
  6. Select Save Settings in the toolbar to make them live, or Preview across site to stage them first (see Staging Global Settings Changes).

You can still change any single colour afterwards.

  1. Adjust the colours in the Colors tab. When they match no existing preset, Save as Preset appears at the bottom of the panel.
  2. Select Save as Preset, enter a name and, if you like, a description, and select Save Preset.

The preset is saved for the whole site and added to favourites. Names must be unique and cannot reuse a built-in preset’s name.

How to edit, rename or delete a custom preset

Section titled “How to edit, rename or delete a custom preset”

In the Choose a Color Preset window, each custom preset row has three buttons:

  • Edit colors opens all 12 colours in three groups (Brand, Light Mode, Dark Mode), each with a colour picker and a hex field. Save Colors saves the preset and refreshes every section on every page that uses it as a section palette. A message confirms how many sections and pages were updated.
  • Rename changes the name and description.
  • Delete removes the preset after you confirm. This cannot be undone. Sections that used it keep their colours; see below.

Built-in presets cannot be edited, renamed or deleted.

Select the star on any preset, in the Choose a Color Preset window or in a section’s palette picker, to add it to favourites or remove it. Favourites are shared by everyone who edits the site, and they are what the Favorites tab of the section palette picker shows. Removing a favourite does not delete the preset.

A section palette replaces the global colours for one section only. The section keeps its own copy of the 12 colours, so it still renders correctly if the preset is later changed or deleted.

  1. Select the section and open its Layout tab.
  2. Under Section Palette (beside Theme Variant), select the palette button. It reads Using global colors when the section has none.
  3. In the Section palette window, choose a tab: Favorites (the default), Recent (custom presets you have applied recently) or Browse all.
  4. Select a palette, then Apply Palette.
  5. Save the page.

Promptless WP always recalculates contrast for a section with its own palette, so text, links and buttons stay readable against its background whether or not Smart Accessibility Colors is enabled.

To go back to the global colours, select Reset to global colors under the palette button, or Clear palette in the picker, then save the page.

The palette button can show a status:

StatusMeaningWhat to do
Out of dateThe preset’s colours changed after the section took its copy.Select Refresh from source, or leave it as it is.
Link brokenThe preset was deleted. The section keeps its last colours.Choose another palette, or Reset to global colors.
  • Up to 50 custom presets per site, and up to 25 favourited built-in presets. Preset names are limited to 50 characters and descriptions to 200.
  • “A preset named … already exists” or “is a built-in preset name”. Choose a different name.
  • The save message says other pages could not be refreshed. The preset is saved; those sections pick up the new colours the next time their pages are edited, or with Refresh from source.
  • Colours look different from the hex values you entered. Smart Accessibility Colors is enabled and has adjusted text or link colours for contrast. See Global Settings.
  • Your WordPress theme’s colour settings are separate. Changing them does not change sections; see Working with Themes.
